How to pack plastic moving boxes
Pack plastic moving boxes with heavier items low, fragile pieces individually wrapped, and gaps filled with light padding. Keep the load manageable and leave enough clearance for the attached lids to close freely.

Do plastic moving boxes need tape or packing material?
ReadyCrate’s attached lids close without tape. Fragile items still need wrapping and cushioning inside: use packing paper, dish towels, or fitted dividers depending on what you are packing. The rigid tote protects the outside of the load; padding keeps the contents from knocking together.
How to pack plates in plastic moving boxes
Stand them on edge, with each piece wrapped. A flat stack puts the weight of the whole pile on the bottom plate.
Step 1
Start with a cushion
Fold a towel into the bottom or use crumpled paper. Pad the sides too: a wrapped plate should not rest against bare plastic.
Step 2
Cover the whole plate
Fold paper around each plate, including the rim. A dish towel works for sturdy everyday plates if it covers the edges as well as the faces.
Step 3
Make a row, not a pile
Stand the wrapped plates vertically, one beside another. Tuck padding at both ends of the row to keep them from falling sideways.
Step 4
Try the lid
Check that the plate fits with padding above and below it. If the lid presses against it, use a deeper dish box. Keep the cushioning.
Glasses, mugs, and stemware
Everyday glassware
Give each glass its own paper wrap, with extra cushioning around mug handles. Set them upright on a padded base and fill the spaces between them. Glasses nested inside one another can knock together even when the outside of the bundle is wrapped.
Wine glasses and delicate pieces
Pad the stem as well as the bowl, then use individual cells in a glass-packing kit. Check that the kit fits your tote. If it needs its matching cardboard box, use that. Follow the kit’s instructions, and leave heavy cookware out of the load.
Can you use dish towels to wrap dishes?
Yes, for sturdy everyday dishes. Wrap each piece in a clean, dry towel with fabric covering the rim and base. Thicker towels are useful underneath the dishes or tucked into gaps. Save paper and fitted dividers for delicate glassware.
The catch is bulk: towels fill a tote quickly. And one big towel around several glasses can hide places where they touch. Wrap separately, then unfold each towel over a counter when unpacking so nothing rolls out.
Four more packing tricks
Pots and pans
Put a dish towel between nested pans to protect the finish. Fill the top pan with potholders. Pack glass lids separately, and give cast iron its own load away from glassware.
Books
Pack books flat, with larger ones underneath. Stop before the tote gets too heavy and fill the remaining space with a throw or cushion. Skip the temptation to fit an entire shelf in one tote.
Bedding
Tuck each sheet set into one of its pillowcases. Label it for the right bed and keep tonight’s set handy. That saves you hunting through three boxes for a fitted sheet at bedtime.
Cords and furniture screws
Photograph cable connections before unplugging them. Bag cords by device and screws by piece of furniture. Keep the hardware bags with your tools so you can rebuild the bed before tackling the boxes.
Label for the room it is going to
Use the removable label on a side that stays visible when stacked. “Office upstairs” tells your helpers more than “Bedroom.” Add a few contents and mark the boxes you need first.
Take a photo of the contents and the tote number before closing it. When you need the coffee grinder, check the photos before opening every kitchen box.
Leave some space, spare your back
A tote does not need to be full of belongings. Stop adding weight while you can still carry it comfortably, and use light padding to keep things in place. The lids should close without pushing down on the contents.
